Metamorphic rock - Wikipedia
Metamorphic rocks are one of the three great divisions of all rock types, and so there is a great variety of metamorphic rock types. In general, if the protolith of a metamorphic rock can be determined, the rock is described by adding the prefix meta-to the protolith rock name. For example, if the protolith is known to be basalt, the rock will be described as a metabasalt.

Common Minnesota Rocks | College of Science and Engineering
Throughout geologic time, Minnesota's landscape has undergone many changes. At times, high mountains lined the horizon. Later, vast seas engulfed the region. Still later, great sheets of ice covered the land. All of these environments are recorded in the rocks and sediments found around the state. The following is a summary of the major rock types found in Minnesota in approximate chronologic ...

Types of Metamorphism
Protolithic - If a rock has undergone only slight metamorphism such that its original texture can still be observed then the rock is given a name based on its original name, with the prefix meta- applied. For example: metabasalt, metagraywacke, meta-andesite, metagranite.

The modification of magma through mixing or through assimilation of country rocks is commonly inferred from various chemical and isotopic features of magmatic rock suites and supported by a variety of field evidence, including features indicative of interaction between two magmas, disaggregation of solids in magma, and varied antecryst populations in volcanic and plutonic rocks.
